Brewers – Brad Mortensen, John Wampler, Sean Overbey, Alex Coppla, Mike Hiller, Scott MacDonald, and Mike Dulin
In operation since 1994, the Legend Brewing Company is a commercial micro-brewery that provides its premium beers to pubs and restaurants primarily in the Richmond, Virginia area but also distributes to other parts of Virginia. The brewery was founded by Thomas Martin, and he has a team of seven brewers that are led by brew master Brad Mortensen who brew five-year round offerings as well as special seasonal brews.
Legends brews both ales and lagers which makes them a bit different from most caft-breweries. Offerings include Lager, a German-style beer with a clean, crisp taste, a light bitterness and a pleasant hop aroma. This is Legends lightest brew, 4.8% ABV, and is similar to a German export style lager. It has a medium-light body with a clean and balanced taste. The brew is light and drinkable, brewed with 100% two-row malted barley and hopped with Hallertau, Tettnang, and Saaz hops.
The second lager brewed at Legends is their 5.8%ABV Pilsner. This is a golden-colored, medium-bodied, Bohemian lager. It is loaded with hop flavor from generous portions of Hallertau and Saaz, and is dry hopped for additional flavor. It has around 40 IBU and starts at 15 P.
Brown Ale is the best-selling brew at Legends. Four types of grain are used in the recipe formulation resulting in a smooth, and slightly sweet brew with subtle roasted notes from dark and caramelized malts. Full bodied, balanced, and garnet-colored, this brew is fermented with the house American Ale yeast strain.
The Porter is a full-bodied Imperial Porter, brewed in the style true English style. The brew has a mild sweetness balanced by moderate bitterness and has loads of unfermented sugars that give the beer a malt backbone (OG 16 P FG 3.5 P). Legends version of this beer is actually similar to sweeter English stouts.
The last year round brew is a Golden IPA, 7.1% ABV, full-bodied, and fruity with liberal amounts of American hops. Strong, pale, and highly hopped like the colonial era export ales of Great Britain, this is Lengend Brewing’s instant cult classic. Golden IPA packs 35 IBU and a starting gravity of 17 P (1068).
Throughout the year seasonal offerings include Oktoberfest, Chocolate Porter, Dopplebock, Stout, and lighter offerings in the summer.
Brad Mortensen brewed for two and a half years at Potomac River Brewing Company in Chantilly, Virginia before heading to Legend Brewing full-time. Brad was hired as assistant Head Brewer at Legend in August of 1998, and was promoted to Head Brewer in January of 1999 (at the time of the original brewery submission). Currently in 2011, the Head Brewer role has been assumed by John Wampler.
